About Krelwear:

Krelwear’s philosophy is based in the beauty of “toobular” knit design. Branching through two separate lines, one of a kind and made to order. The products range from sweaters, dresses, skirts and tanks, to accessories such as hats, scarves, leg warmers and cuffs. The one of kind line embraces flaws with no rules at all; enhancing originality through organic methods, let it run, knit.

These garments are elegant and funky. Inspiration is found in the process using mixtures of the finest yarns available. “Toobular” design, lets us create pieces with no or very few seams. When the fabric is completed so is the garment. Most pieces can be worn several ways making them interchangeable and convertible. The made to order line follows the same “toobular” philosophy, but are more conservative in comparison. The fabrics are much simpler in their fabric structure. (Some of these pieces are also convertible!)

KRELwear was recognized as a GenArt “Fresh Faces of Fashion” Among its list of thrilled garment owners are: Alanis Morrisset, Christina Ricci, Carmen Electra, Pink, Cameron Diaz, and Natasha Lyonne. The line is available in boutiques around the U.S. and Japan.

A “Kelly typical” Saturday night out in Nosara

6 Dec

No one stays home on a Saturday night in Nosara; no matter how early you need to get up on Sunday morning for surfing, yoga or church.  In fact, last night, a troop of us did the whole Saturday Night circuit of the Nosara nightlife/party scene and the beautiful people were out en masse…starting with swank cocktails at the chill, sophisticated beach-front lounge, La Luna, in Playa Pelada.   Then, we all stopped by El Fenix for some Guaro-inspired sangrias.

After El Fenix, we jumped into The Hulk (my green monster truck) and joined the party at Café Lounge @ Kaya Sol—my gal, Holly, was jamming with a full reggae/jazz ensemble and the floor was packed with Nosara’s gorgeous people (and I have photos to prove it!)

After Café Lounge, we popped into La Banana because, frankly, DJ Paul Costa is my fave local DJ…he had us dancing to everything from old skool funk to ABBA to Michael J—classic dance floor hits mixed with a little urban beats.

Look at the watch…what?!  It is only midnight?!  Well, let’s go to Tropicana!  So the caravan sets off to centro Nosara to the largest dance hall in Nosara.  Loving DJ Pina’s reggae, latin, house, big beat and splashes of techno.  A typical Saturday night in Nosara can end anywhere from 2:30 AM to 4 AM (depending if you decide to go to the beach after all the clubs close!)

Anyway, know that Saturday night is not the only hot night out in Nosara, we even have fun on school nights over here on the beach…get ready for the grand opening of El Fenix @ Refugio del Sol (right across from Pancho’s on Playa Pelada), this coming Wednesday, DEC 9…the Kingo Lovers (Costa Rican reggae band from San Jose) will be performing…show starts at 8 pm…2000 colones cover.  Everyone and their cousin will be there.

Now you can have fun on a school night– El Fenix, at Refugio del Sol, brings Wii and some Southern Hospitality to Playa Pelada!

23 Nov

We have new colorful neighbors in Playa Pelada whom I think are going to put Playa Pelada back on the Nosara nightlife and entertainment map.  Right across the street from Pancho’s, in what used to be Sarafina’s Restaurant, new owners Joshua Flores and Marica Banes, from Savannah, Georgia, have spiced up Refugio del Sol boutique bed and breakfast, and dubbed its new multi-media entertainment venue as “El Fenix.”

Personally, I am uber-excited about Joshua and Marcia’s plans for El Fenix, at Refugio del Sol.  We, locals, have been craving a new, fresh more inter-active entertainment venue in the neighborhood for a long while.  Aside from serving old skool breakfast, taste-y lunches, and home-made southern-cuisine-meets-Costa-Rican-fare-style tapas (by the way, they call them “bocas” down here) in the evenings, El Fenix is offering a whole buffet of new, fun, participatory, and unique activities for every night of the week.

Starting December 9th, you and your family and friends can participate in any of the following week-day evening events:

  • Mondays:  Trivia Night Think you’re smart?  Well, prove it!  Bring your family and/or friends and compete in groups, on the Wii, for prizes!  Every Monday night; starts at 8 pm.  Bring your game on!
  • Texas Hold’em Poker You got to know when to hold ‘em; know when to fold ‘em; know when to walk away; and know when to run…the early bird Texas Hold’em set starts at 7 pm/later set at 9 pm.  There will also be drink specials.
  • Wii Wednesday’s Here is your chance to try out Nintendo Wii games from bowling, golf, boxing, and tennis on a large projector screen with family and friends—they even have the brand new DJ Hero–where you get to be the DJ!
  • Thursday’s Pre-Banana Sunset Party: Grab some drink specials along with gourmet tapas/bocas and watch the sunset on Playa Pelada before heading over to La Banana (this is the perfect place to “warm-up” with sangrias and have a light delicious meal before La Banana’s Thursday Reggae Nites!)

El Fenix at Refugio del Sol will be open for full breakfasts and lunches starting on December 1; hours 7 am to 2 pm (Monday thru Saturday.)

The Grand Opening of El Fenix and start of weekly night events and tapas bar, is Wednesday, DEC 9. The party starts at sunset and there will be live entertainment (to be announced.)  And know that Sunday Brunch and Drive-In Movie Night (on the big projector screen) will be coming soon as well.

For more information about Refugio del Sol or El Fenix, call Marcia or Joshua, at 506-682-0287 (Costa Rica); 912-376-3404 (US) or just pop in and visit.

So you think you can sing? Open Mic at La Banana on Wednesday’s

18 Nov

DJ Paul Costa is back from his trip and will be hosting open mic, every Wednesday night, starting at 8 pm, at La Banana.  For those of you familiar with Paul’s music, he promises to play for us, as well as some other local faves, like Christy and I hope Gerardo…this is your opportunity to try out those songs you were working on during the Rainy Season, or for visitors to show off their talent.

Please share your talent this evening.  And if you are nervous about performing in public, you can use my mantra:  “I will never see these people again. I will never see these people again.”

Please know, that even though this is a photo of me, singing badly in public, I promise not to subject you to this torture in Nosara!

What to do this weekend?! November 19-22, 2009

17 Nov

You would not believe how many emails I get daily asking me, “What is going on this weekend in Nosara?” both from locals and visitors.  Therefore, I will share with you what I plan to do with my visiting gal pals this coming week (NOTE: I italicize the word “plan” because here, in the jungle, to plan is an over-used expression that suggests what one might do if circumstances are favorable.)  WARNING:  There will be 5 of us women loose in Nosara this weekend!

Starting as early as Wednesday afternoon, November 18, I am going walk some of my friends down the beach, to the Harmony Hotel, for a FREE yoga lesson with Anna Green, from 4 to 5 pm.  After enlightenment, we will stroll down Playa Guiones, just in time for sunset, on our way to Gilded Iguana for Happy Hour!   At Gilded Iguana, we will cool off in the pool, with a tropical cocktail in hand, and admire the surfers, mae.

Dinner?  Most likely at my house, on Wednesday night, a home-made meal made from green stuff I hoarded at last Saturday’s Organic Market at Giardino Tropicale, and some herbs I stole from Wantana’s organic garden.   I will most likely attempt a fresh-caught corvine flambé, recipe stolen from L’Aqua Viva’s Executive Chef, Daniel Salzaar (Hee! Hee!)  Secret ingredients?  Brandy and Triple Sec!  Wednesday nights tend to be “quiet” nights in Nosara so we will use this evening to catch up on the porch.

Thursday morning, I will take the gals to Olga’s, a local restaurant on the beach, for a typical Tico breakfast—most likely gallo pinto, con huevos y queso, for me!  We will no doubt do a Qi-Gong session with Milagros on the beach (with my dog, Zuko), and grab a bite at Beach Dog Café for a late energizing lunch.

Even though DJ Paul DaCosta is out of town this Thursday night, Reggae Nite at La Banana will go on!  (Thank God!  I need a weekly dose of reggae like most people need ear plugs for the Howler Monkeys.)  We will probably pop into Casa Tucan for a few warm-up drinks and munchies, before heading to La Banana.   NOTE: This is always a late night!

Friday night, I am going to drag everyone to Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant and Bar for veggie deluxe pizza and $1 margaritas (for the ladies only!), and sing-along with Jason– yes, one of our fave, local acoustic artists, Jason Michael Wilcox Fernandez (say that fast, three times, after a shot of tequila!), aka “Jason”, is back in town, armed with his guitar, on Friday the 20th, at Pancho’s from 7pm to 10 pm.

Saturday morning, I will be taking the gals to the Organic Market at Giardino Tropicale, from 8 AM to noon-ish, just so we can make a luxurious, nourishing picnic for the beach.  Saturday evening, we plan to get dolled up to go to Café Lounge for dinner and drinks, before heading to La Banana for a night of dancing.

We will have all day Sunday to recover from Saturday night, and just as sun begins to set Sunday evening, we will head to Pacifico Azul for a beach bonfire BBQ, in Garza.  Pura vida.

RAIN CHECK! Jason at Pancho’s CANCELLED for tonight (Friday 13th) and Neighborhood Watch Training Program re-scheduled for NOV 17-19

13 Nov

One of our fave, local acoustic artists, Jason Michael Wilcox Fernandez was scheduled to play at Pancho’s tonight, but unfortunately, he got stuck in San Jose.  Therefore, he is re-scheduling his performance at Pancho’s for next Friday, NOV 20.

Another cancellation, ah… life in the jungle…The Neighborhood Watch Training Program (open to all!)  has been re-scheduled for NOV 17-19 at the FUCAN.   Please know that the material has been translated into English and if you need an English version, please email Bobbi Johnson at bobbij@racsa.co.cr .  Contact Coconut Steve for more info:  Reyersteve@yahoo.com.

Grand Opening of Café Lounge, Nov 7—“The White Affair”

8 Nov

This past weekend, NOV 6/7, was action-packed with festive events throughout Nosara:  from the Luciano Show at La Banana (everyone in Nosara and their cousin was there, dancing in the rain until 2 AM!) to live local music at both Pancho’s (Playa Pelada) and Casa Tucan  (Playa Guiones.)  Yes, folks, the peace and tranquility (and sometimes boredom) of the Rainy Season is OVER—let the insanity begin!

By far the most unique event over the weekend was the grand opening of Café Lounge (the old Kaya Sol Cafe); the dream of Dian Lindsey and former chef of Vista del Paraiso, Debbie Bishop.  The transformation of Kaya Sol Café, which was a typical sand-infested surfer-beach bar, into the sophisticated and family-friendly Café Lounge is epic.  I kept running around saying to anyone and everyone: “The bathrooms!  Did you see what they did to the bathrooms?!  Check out the bathrooms!”  (NOTE:  The previous bathrooms were akin to something out of a crack-house…you felt shady just using them.)

Dubbed “The White Affair”, the grand opening of Café Lounge started with a private party of local Who’s Who in Nosara; everyone elegantly dressed in white (well except for a few people—you know who you are!!) sipping champagne, white sangrias, or beers.  Local servers, dressed in black, served hors d’ouvres of everything from petite pork sandwiches to chicken wings to spicy hummus on fresh baked chips.  Our table alone, known as “The Vegetarians”, inhaled two whole bowls of the spinach dip (with fresh baked bread!) and the hummus platter.

It was refreshing to see children playing on the fooz-ball table; dogs; abuelos; entire families and young gorgeous couples dressed up and talking story under one roof, sparkling with white and blue lights.   Around 8 pm, Café Lounge opened its doors to the public; people spilled in.

No one seemed to notice the down-pour outside, or that the scheduled rock band, Igni Ferroque, was running late (they were delayed by a car-breakdown en route from San Jose–ah…welcome to Nosara!), because a local drum squad showed up, complete with Brazilian beats, whistles and dancers.  Everyone was on the dance-floor so much so that the band had to fight the crowds to set up their equipment.

For more information about events, activities, the menu and such please contact Dian Lindsey at kearmy@hotmail.com, or call 2682 0080
