About Krelwear:

Krelwear’s philosophy is based in the beauty of “toobular” knit design. Branching through two separate lines, one of a kind and made to order. The products range from sweaters, dresses, skirts and tanks, to accessories such as hats, scarves, leg warmers and cuffs. The one of kind line embraces flaws with no rules at all; enhancing originality through organic methods, let it run, knit.

These garments are elegant and funky. Inspiration is found in the process using mixtures of the finest yarns available. “Toobular” design, lets us create pieces with no or very few seams. When the fabric is completed so is the garment. Most pieces can be worn several ways making them interchangeable and convertible. The made to order line follows the same “toobular” philosophy, but are more conservative in comparison. The fabrics are much simpler in their fabric structure. (Some of these pieces are also convertible!)

KRELwear was recognized as a GenArt “Fresh Faces of Fashion” Among its list of thrilled garment owners are: Alanis Morrisset, Christina Ricci, Carmen Electra, Pink, Cameron Diaz, and Natasha Lyonne. The line is available in boutiques around the U.S. and Japan.

Art and Goddesses in the jungle

19 Dec

Last night, there were events going on all over Nosara:  From the inauguration party of Organico Market (our local version of “Trader Joe’s”) to Fiesta del Toro in Esperanza (yes, that is what the fireworks were about!); from Paul DaCosta “en vivo” at the Gilded Iguana to live music @ Pancho’s; and then late night dancing at La Banana and Tropicana.  However, one of my few complaints about living in the jungle is my need for intellectual stimulation and lack of fine-arts.

Therefore, I opted to attend the very cosmopolitan opening of a new art show, featuring local artists, at La Luna.  In collaboration with La Luna, we held our “Goddess Gathering” at the show.  Last night’s opening reminded me of my days as an art slut in Miami—when the gang and I would go art-gallery hopping, with martinis in hand, throughout Miami’s Design District.  La Luna’s opening did not disappoint me—flowing sangrias; hypnotic DJ; artists mingling with fellow art-whore’s like myself (not to mention 15 of my best gal pals in this town, dressed to KILL); and quality art work.  I applaud Nina Arias, the curator of this show, for such a sophisticated, unique and multi-sensory exhibit.

The new exhibition at La Luna features fine-arts photography, tapestries, paintings, and more.  And I am not going to describe them to you—you have to go see for yourself!  The art exhibit at La Luna will be going on all month! However, I do wish to give public kudos to Paul DaCosta (yes, the La Banana DJ and acoustic musician) for his intellectual paintings; and Cy Rinkel, for her spiritually-inspired, Costa Rica flavored tapestries.

Here are some photos from the art show and Goddess Gathering held at La Luna last night.   (And just in case you are wondering where the hell Marcia, Stephanie, Ashley, and I got such STUNNING dresses in this jungle village, Corey hooked us up at her little in-house boutique on Playa Pelada.)  Corey’s place is just across from Pancho’s and two houses down from Refugio del Sol. (Ladies: I strongly recommend you check out Corey’s shop—jewelry, real bloody SHOES, sexy bathing suits, even sexier dresses, and more—and all economical—the average dress, straight from Miami, costs less than $30 USD!)

The Official Opening of the Nosara Saturday Organic Market: DEC 12

7 Dec

Get your market bags and coolers ready for another season of fresh, local foods; crafts and a lot more.  Giardino Tropicale, in Playa Guiones, will host the 3rd season of Nosara’s only local, outdoor organic market.  And every year the market gets bigger and bigger! The market runs every Saturday from 8AM to 1PM, in the parking lot of Pizzeria Giardino Tropicale.

Returning vendors include our favorite farmers:  Orgánicos del Cerro Verde with fresh produce and Quinta Hojancha with local, healthy meats; also JP’s raw food treats and artisan goat milk products; home-baked goods; casero bread; tamales and fresh OJ and fruit smoothies will also be for sale.  Anna grows and produces her own Noni (which is a local herbal tonic for everything from indigestion to detox to cleaning the blood.)  Check out Cy’s unique gift cards and tapestries.  Flowers and more.

Carrie and Saskia from Escuelita de Nosara will also be offering haircuts and face-painting to raise money for the kids at Escuelita until it starts in January. Recycling Nosara will also be there raising awareness and selling reusable grocery bags.  Expect musicians, jewelry, artsy-fartsy stuff…a great place to meet people, buy organics and pick up a few unique souvenirs or holiday gifts.

*** New/Prospective vendors please contact management at 2682 4000, or info@giardinotropicale.com for information to participate.

Seeking volunteers/donations/gifts-in-kind for Escuelita de Nosara (summer camp for local ninos!): JAN 4 to FEB 1, 2010

1 Dec

Escuelita de Nosara is a local non-profit association, providing varied and creative educational opportunities to the children of Nosara. Their mission is to provide the children of Nosara a quality education, based on creativity, respect for themselves and others, and ecological consciousness.

They provide an equal opportunity educational program encouraging hands-on experience, allowing the children to express their own ideas and feelings and to discover their inner strengths. Their vision is that the children of Nosara have a broader educational foundation that shows them the opportunities available to them in their future, whether in higher education, career or personal enrichment.

Therefore, every January, during summer break, the Association “Escuelita de Nosara” holds a summer camp for local children in Nosara.  This is an opportunity for local kids to experience and participate in a wide variety of arts, sports, theatre, crafts, yoga, and such.  These kinds of classes are not part of the local school curriculum.

Summer Day Camp

Dates: January 4th to February 1st, 2010

Location: Santa Marta Public School

Schedule: Monday to Friday (it is a half day program)

There are several ways you can contribute or participate in Summer Day Camp, and know that you do not have to be an artist or teacher to help!

Volunteer your time! Help out during the summer camp, supervising the children, preparing healthy snacks, organizing supplies, etc…There is a lot to do!

• Donate arts & crafts and sports materials!

Share your passion! Share a project, activity or idea with the children of escuelita. If you would like to come and talk about your career to the older children, contact us! This is an opportunity to inspire kids to think beyond junior high school and an incredible way for you to give back to the community.

• Save Your Junk! We are collecting recyclable materials for use in art projects. You can help us by saving now items such as the pop-tops on soda and beer cans, scraps of material or old clothes, bottle caps, large and small plastic bottles, large dog food bags (i.e., Ascan), big woven rice bags, toilet paper rings, etc.

Make a Financial Contribution! Financial donations are greatly appreciated and needed to pay for transportation of kids during the summer camp, for the purchase of art supplies and sports equipment and for the theatrical production.

In Costa Rica:
Direct cash or personal cheque payment to members of the board of Escuelita de Nosara

In the US:
Tax deductible donations can be made through “Friends of Nosara” This non-profit corporation is recognized as a public charity under Section 501 (c) (3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. Its purpose is to support charitable educational, cultural, civic and social activities in Nosara. Include a notation in the memo section of the check that the money is to be directed to “Escuelita de Nosara”. Official receipts will be issued for your tax return. Send checks to:

Sponsor A Child! Buy a passport—or 20—and offer summer camp to local children. Starting in early December individuals and businesses are invited to purchase “passports” at US$ 10 each to help underwrite the expenses of producing escuelita, which is run by volunteers and made possible by generous individuals and businesses. Those who purchase passports can either donate them to escuelita to give as scholarships, or give them to their employees and friends who have children. They make great Christmas presents!

Call to all local artists: Nina Arias, new curator of La Luna Art Gallery, is seeking fine art submissions for DEC show

11 Nov

I am confident you will hear much about Colombian-born, Nina Arias, over the next few months—not only because she is opening a new Bohemian vintage boutique in Playa Guiones (called “The Boutique”); or that she is organizing a REAL fashion show here in Nosara; or she is collecting donated art supplies for local children; but Nina is also the new art curator for La Luna Art Gallery.

women world statueLa Luna is located, literally, on Playa Pelada– neighbors with local restaurant and un-official community center, Olga’s.  Nina is now actively seeking fine and contemporary arts from locals, such as: photography, paintings, sculptures, drawings, even mixed media for her December show.

I know some of you are already professional artists, but then I also know there are a lot of “in-the-closet” artists hiding in the jungle, so I am hoping you will contact Nina at 8952 2456 or email:  arias.nina@gmail.com and submit some samples of your work.

You will never know, unless you try!

Funds for Nosara community development, Nosara Community Meeting (You snooze, you lose…money!)

26 Oct

Funds for Nosara community development, Nosara Community Meeting:  THURS OCT 29, at 4 pm, Bambu Restaurant (You snooze, you lose…money!)

Last Thursday, October 22, the Nicoya Municipale, in partnership with La Fuerza Pública and PROJECT OF ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT, aka POUND, called a Nosara community meeting at Bambu Restaurant in centro Nosara.  The objective of this meeting was to bring all local community groups, non-profit organizations, churches, schools, businesses, and concerned residents together to inform Nosara residents and groups how to apply for municipale funding for local community development.

Background:

Both international and national organizations (FOMUDE, MIDEPLAN, ifam, ONU HABITAT, and UNDP: United Nations Development Programme) have allocated funds to Nicoya Municipale for at least 11 community development projects and programs, throughout the entire Nicoya region.  In order to apply for funds for community development projects and programs, the Nosara community has to present its projected projects, plans and programs to the local leadership and PROJECT OF ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT, aka POUND, at the next Nosara community meeting.

The next Nosara community meeting is Thursday, October 29, at 4pm, at Bambu Restaurant, centro Nosara.

Community Development Themes:

Nicoya Municipale (and its funders) seek to fund programs and projects that address community development issues such as: economic sustainability; social issues (migration, health, poverty, etc.); safety and security; education; public services (water, electricity, transportation, roads, etc.); urban and rural planning; infrastructure; and culture.

Therefore, if you or your group/business/organization has ideas about how to improve community development issues (listed above) and would like to be considered for this funding, you must attend and participate in this THURSDAY’s Nosara community meeting, at 4 pm, at Bambu Restaurant.

For more information, please contact Karla Venegas Fuentes, of POUND, at kavefu22@gmail.com or by phone:  8879 3091

Every Saturday: Organic Market at Giardino Tropicale

In case haven’t heard, there is a precious organic market held at 8 am to 1 pm, every Saturday, in the parking lot of Giardino Tropicale.  There are food tastings (try Poztol local health drink—good for digestive issues!), live music, BBQ, natural drinks and organic fruit and veggies, arts and crafts (check out Paloma’s quirky, unique puppets!!!), joyas (jewelry), sometimes clothes (ropas), and eco-friendly products.

This is a great venue to meet some of Nosara’s gifted locals and artisans, meet new people, meet some local alternative health-care practitioners, and talk story.

I strongly recommend getting there early because the organic strawberries, spinach, and various local fruits go quickly!  You can also get fresh, hot tortillas from the Tortilla Lady and fresh, home-baked goods from June.  (I highly recommend June’s veggie quiche and sprout-bread.)

Rumor:  Sushi at Zen Café

Rumor has it that Zen Café (next to Innocent Surf School, near Café de Paris) will be adding sushi to its culinary repertoire of organic coffee and espresso, paninis, fresh juices, raw foods, and baked goods.  Rumor has it they will be preparing fresh sushi on Saturday’s and Wednesday’s.  I think it is the same sushi chef from La Luna’s (someone correct me if I am wrong!)

Junglist Arte Expo:  La Luna, Wednesday, February 11 at 5pm

Whether you are an art-slut (like me!), an art snob, or just curious about local culture, make sure to visit The Junglist Arte Expo at La Luna’s (Playa Pelada) on Wednesday, February 11.  The expo starts at 5 pm.

*In case you have never been to La Luna’s, at Playa Pelada, via the beach, it is just a few sandy steps away from Olga’s.  It is a sophisticated, romantic oasis on the beach, with a world-class, international menu and top-shelf cocktails.  Unlike most places in Nosara, this is a “dress to impress” establishment (this does not suggest they will kick you out for wearing a bathing suit and flip flops, but you have been warned!)  The first time I showed up, I felt terribly under-dressed!

Friday Night Trance/Ambient/Deep House/Drum and Bass DJ Sessions at La Luna’s

This is my fave place to be, in Nosara, on a Friday night!  Start the evening off, by candlelight, over-looking the beach, or in an open-air cabana tent, with some sushi and a Bombay Tonic; with DJ Nikola and crew, spinning a variety of ambient, sometimes trance, mix in a little James Brown, and then some heavy bass, in the background.  Sometimes, Ray sets up his surreal visual art show outside, via a wall-sized projector screen.  The dance-floor (which is just a cleared space of earth!) gets crowded.  Excellent service—give besos to Eduardo the bartender.

This place gets packed after 10 pm…the dinner crowd usually stays on well into the night for dancing.  A great place to see Costa Rica’s beautiful people!

Please contact me at kellyofthepattersons@yahoo.com if you wish to post your events and activities on the Nosara Coconut Telegraph!

Introducing Nosara’s (Costa Rica) Online Coconut Telegraph!

29 Jan

I just moved to Nosara, Costa Rica (Playa Pelada, to be exact!) a few weeks ago, from San Francisco.  I am in love with the life here: the people, the beaches, even the jungle (and all its not-always friendly creatures.)  Everyday, I meet amazing, friendly, talented people from the local Tican acupuncturist to yoga instructors (and pupils) from the Yoga Institute; from organic farmers to fisherman; from surf instructors to “Snow-Birds”; from Mexican Shaman to the Christian Surfers Association: a refreshing combination of ex-pats, some tourists, and locals trying to make a simple uncomplicated living, at a slow, stress-free pace, conveniently located in a tropical paradise.

Part of the fun of moving to a new place is exploring!  Since I have started exploring the Nosara area, daily, I make thrilling discoveries such as La Luna’s Friday night Trance Dance Sessions with DJ Nikola (with Ray’s surreal visual art projection show), or Open Mic at Kaya Sol on Monday nights, or the town Bull Fiesta/Fight (which should be called “Bull Run”– because drunk people just irritate an already pissed-off bull and RUN.)  There is always something to do…from volleyball at the beach to surfing, kayaking, exploring bat caves, hiking to waterfalls, horse-back riding, fishing, or even just trying to catch a Green Flash at sunset (by the way, I got a Green Flash the very first sunset I observed on Playa Pelada!)  Magical!

During my explorations of Nosara, I quickly realized there was no tangible local community calendar.  I heard about the arrival of the (1,000+) mating sea turtles at Ostional the day of turtle arrival, thus causing a mad dash to hitch a ride to see this National Geographic event.  Therefore, I decided to create this blog as a means for both the Nosara community and potential visitors to learn about Nosara, as well as know all there is to do here!

I am hoping locals will contribute stories, anecdotes and useful tips to this blog (English and Spanish welcome!) and that everyone keep me informed of upcoming local events in the Nosara general vicinity: which includes Ostional down to Garza.

Therefore, if you have anything to share about life in Nosara, please do not hesitate to contact me at kellyofthepattersons@yahoo.com or visit me at Villas Las Tecas (http://www.lastecas.net/)

Besos,

Kelly N Patterson
